CBD Oil for Nursing Mothers - What Are the Side Effects?
Is it Safe to Take CBD Oil While Breastfeeding?

“Safety is, as always, a crucial concern when you’re consuming anything that may affect the health of your baby. By clarifying what’s officially proven and what’s not yet researched, we hope to give new moms a safe, responsible, and informed take on CBD.”

With the CBD industry booming and research reporting amazing benefits, it’s no wonder that many women are curious as to whether it’s safe to use CBD while breastfeeding or CBD during pregnancy. CBD provides benefits with the potential to assuage many of the unpleasant symptoms that you may expect when you’re expecting, including:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Pain and inflammation
  • Hormonal and emotional imbalance
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety & Stress
  • Mood swings

CBD During Pregnancy for Morning Sickness

In addition, CBD has been shown to ease or eliminate nausea and vomiting in clinical trials. Morning sickness can be a nightmare, and CBD has been shown to function as an antiemetic agent that reduces or eliminates nausea and prevents vomiting.

Studies show that CBD agonises the CB1 receptors in the brain, and in doing so, suppresses vomiting. Cannabis is thought by many to be one of the most effective anti-emetic substances available. Thus, relief from nausea and vomiting is another major point of appeal for expectant mothers considering CBD during pregnancy.

CBD During Pregnancy for Insomnia

CBD has been shown to improve sleep and establish healthy sleeping patterns — a major plus for pregnant women, given that 94% of expectant mothers experience insomnia. CBD regulates our circadian rhythms or sleep-wake patterns, setting our “internal body clock” to appropriate times for sleeping and waking up. By establishing healthy sleeping patterns, CBD can improve sleep in the long-term — if not throughout your term — for pregnant women seeking relief from insomnia during pregnancy. And naturally, since pregnant women often can’t turn to conventional or pharmaceutical sleep aids, this natural remedy has huge potential as a supplement to improve your sleep without risking your baby’s health in utero.

CBD During Pregnancy for Anxiety

Studies show that up to 10.8% of women in their postpartum period experience generalized anxiety disorder, a clinical form of anxiety distinguished by the persistence of anxiety when, in short, there’s nothing to be anxious about. Generalized anxiety disorder is the most commonly treated form of anxiety, yet pregnant and nursing women have fewer options than most coping with this disorder, given that pregnant women can’t turn to prescription drugs often used to treat generalized anxiety. Nor can breastfeeding mothers, as the chemicals in anti-anxiety drugs could be transmitted through breast milk to the baby, and this is cause to a range of undesirable side effects.

That said, maternal anxiety is by no means limited to the postpartum period: as many as 10.5% of women experience generalized anxiety disorder during their pregnancy. Thus it comes as no surprise that women are interested in CBD oil during pregnancy for anxiety. And naturally, given that generalized anxiety disorder is associated with the postpartum phase, women are growing interested in the safety and potential of using CBD oil while breastfeeding.

CBD works to relieve anxiety by boosting levels of anandamide (the “bliss-chemical”) to promote balance and nip anxiety in the bud. Many consumers report incredible results from using CBD for anxiety, and this is perhaps its most well-known and popular benefit. Naturally, this is another major draw for expectant mothers who are discouraged from seeking common forms of anxiety relief.

What we know about CBD, Pregnancy, and Breastfeeding in 2019: The Research (or Lack Thereof) and the Potential for Future Discoveries

CBD has undeniable benefits for expectant and new mothers, but is it safe to use while you’re carrying or nursing your baby?

Unfortunately, as amazing as these benefits could be for maternal health, there is no existing research as to whether or not CBD is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This isn’t necessarily because CBD isn’t necessarily safe for you and your baby — it’s because there’s no extant research on CBD during breastfeeding and pregnancy at this time.

There is similarly limited research on CBD during breastfeeding. One thing that scientists do know, at this point in time, is that the cannabinoids from any CBD you consume during breastfeeding will be passed on to your baby. Yet there’s still not enough research to determine whether or not that’s an issue with regard to your baby’s health.

The popularity of CBD is a recent phenomenon, and cannabis products have saturated the mainstream marketplace — contemporary science simply needs some time to catch up. There’s plenty of research on THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) during pregnancy and breastfeeding — and this evidence actually shows that consuming THC can be harmful for your child.

With CBD, the results may not be the same. And those results will come soon enough — with mothers’ growing interest in CBD for all of the aforementioned reasons and more, scientists will surely launch research into this area of CBD use in the near future.

Ultimately, the most important thing to consider about CBD while breastfeeding or using CBD during pregnancy is to protect your and your baby’s health. And if you still find yourself intrigued by the benefits of CBD after reading this article, we recommend no matter what that you consult your doctor about using CBD while breastfeeding or pregnant.

In conclusion, despite the amazing potential of CBD for new and expectant mothers, it’s always best to err on the side of caution when you’re considering your baby’s health.
